I recall as a kid putting together a nice Hot Wheels track out of various home objects. My vehicles would leap over dangerous pits (a bowl of water), slide through tight valleys (pillows), and naturally travel through difficult terrain (my pets) on these courses before triumphantly reaching the finish line. Now that I’m a parent of two, I’m always surprised by the tracks I come across in the shop. My boys now have a mini city of orange tracks in their bedroom to race around and wonder who will win after many hours of construction! Thankfully, we’re all huge gamers, and with the debut of Hot Wheels Unleashed, we got to witness two of our favorite things come together.
Hot Wheels Unleashed is a racing game that includes many of the Hot Wheels that many of us older people used to play with as children, as well as cars that were released after our time. The racing is certainly more arcade-style, with all the ridiculous speed boosts and leaps that you’d expect from a game like this.
In Hot Wheels Unleashed, you may play in a variety of modes. The following are the details:
- Hot Wheels City Rumble — This is the game’s primary campaign. As you attempt to free the city, you will race your way through over 50 different races, fight monsters, and complete various time trials.
- Quick Race – This is a feature included in almost all racing games. Do you have a particular race that you want to improve at? Quick Race is the place to go if you want to improve your track navigation.
- Time Attack – Time Attack is similar to Quick Race, with the difference that you are not competing against artificial intelligence. You’re just competing against yourself as you try to beat your previous lap time!
- Multiplayer – Do you think you’ve got what it takes to take on the world? In multiplayer, you’ll battle against up to 12 other players online in races.
- Basement — As you go through the Hot Wheels City Rumble, you will acquire various home objects that you may use to decorate the Basement, a hangout place.
- Track Builder – This mode is for those of you big track builders out there who want to use their creative muscles! As you go through City Rumble, you’ll discover new methods to make your designs more weirder!
- Editor of Liveries – Want to make your cars stand out from the crowd? You may give your collection of cars a new coat of paint in the Livery.
You can’t simply select any vehicle and expect that everything will be in proportion. Each vehicle has its unique set of statistics that you must be aware of. They are categorized from common to legendary automobiles. The average car has poor stats, and you’re more likely to win by a hair (if you’re lucky) in later races. New vehicles are unlocked via opening blind boxes, completing certain races, or purchasing them. The blind boxes may be risky since the contents are entirely random. This method appeals to me, but it has the potential to be disastrous. I had no need for the rest of my vehicles for the remainder of the game after opening the third box, which included a legendary car with near-perfect stats! However, if you have a favorite vehicle with poor numbers, you may buy to improve it using money earned from winning races.
I’d want to speak a little bit more about the track construction mode since I believe this is where you’ll want to spend all of your time once you’ve completed the main narrative. It’s a fantastic mode with a plethora of choices for you to flesh out the most passionate thoughts you’ve had in your mind. You may adjust the length of your tracks, as well as bend and twist them to go in any direction. The possibilities are really endless. Despite this, I believe it came at a cost. Making a basic track won’t require much time or skill, but as you become more inventive, you’ll find yourself fighting the controller. It took me five minutes to find out how to remove a track segment. If you want the track to loop into a vertical curly form, you’ll have to do some controller gymnastics to shape a portion of it. If this is aimed at a younger audience, I’m afraid that the breadth of the project will deter many individuals and cause them to abandon it.
That being said, Hot Wheels Unleased is a FANTASTIC game that made me feel like a child all over again. The controls were very easy, and I was quickly reaching the finish line and winning races. I’m looking forward to seeing everything the forthcoming DLC has to offer!
