In a world where superheroes are real, one man is about to make the biggest mistake of his life – meeting his hero.
“Hawkeye” is a new show on the Disney channel that follows the adventures of Kate Bishop, a young woman who has been living in New York City for years. She spends her days as an unlicensed private investigator and her nights fighting crime with her super-powered bow and arrow. The first episode of “Hawkeye” aired on November 17th, 2017.
Hawkeye – Episode 1 – “Never Meet Your Heroes” : Hawkeye – Episode 1 – “Never Meet Your Heroes”
Hawkeye, Marvel’s new Diseny+ series aimed at replacing one of their iconic characters with a new… oh, I mean extending their already large cinematic world in new and exciting ways, has been released. (It’s forced me to violate my Thanksgiving custom of avoiding Christmas-related activities until midday, but duty beckons.) It’s broadcasting one episode a week, in line with the new streaming format — until this week, when episodes 1 and 2 were published, presumably so the whole series could air before Christmas. “Never Meet Your Heroes,” the series’ debut, provides us a solid picture of what to anticipate from the series. Whether that’s a good thing or a terrible thing depends on how you feel about legacy heroes.
Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a teenage archer and martial arts specialist inspired by Hawkeye’s bravery during the Battle of New York, attends a high-society party on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where she discovers onto illicit activity. Meanwhile, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) is in town with his kids, attempting to make up for missed Avengers time by showing them New York around Christmas. Welcome to storytelling, if you’re wondering whether the two will ever meet.
The Bishops live in a swanky apartment near Grand Central Station (and, as luck and symbolism would have it, directly across the street from Stark Tower!). “Never Meet Your Heroes” begins with an almost ten-minute flashback to the Battle of New York at the end of The Avengers – it’s obvious before the reveal because the Bishops live in a swanky apartment near Grand Central Station (and, as luck and symbolism would have it, directly across the street from Star Kate’s parents are feuding about money, with Eleanor pressuring her husband to sell the house where he grew up in order to alleviate financial difficulties, something neither he nor Kate want to do. The Bishop house is destroyed as the Chitauri onslaught begins, and Kate is about to be splattered by a speeding alien space cycle – until she is saved by a misdirected exploding arrow. Kate loves to listen in on other people’s conversations, her father is gone, and she idolizes Hawkeye.
*SPOILERS*
Then there’s the creative opening credits sequence, which displays animated pictures of Kate as she grows older, acquiring archery and combat abilities to emulate her idol. When they’re done, adult Kate is like a young Clint: good with a bow and arrow but brash and naughty, creating a lot of problems and causing her mother sorrow as well as an expensive bill for a bell tower repair. Her meeting with her mother is a powerful moment, emphasizing the chasm that has developed between them; Kate is dressed in torn jeans and a hoodie, while Eleanor is dressed elegantly in a red gown and getting ready for a formal social occasion. Eleanor cleans up after Kate, just as Eleanor dresses to murder and Kate dresses as if she’s been dead. Kate doesn’t wear the dress her mother made for her to the party, instead opting for a dark tux that gives the impression she’s a waitress.
What was said in the flashback lies at the heart of “Never Meet Your Heroes”‘ current scenes: Kate is concerned with what makes her happy – her house, her favorite outfits, fun, and individualism – while Eleanor is concerned with status, looks, and money. These arguments, however, are not eloquently stated; rather, they are proven via the actions of the characters. They’re neither cartoonish nor absolute. Eleanor loves Kate, and Kate recognizes that her irresponsibility is causing her mother a lot of grief. They’re not caricatures; they’re simply humans with particular characteristics. This is excellent writing, and it follows in the footsteps of the best instances of MCU narrative and character development. I’m pleased Hawkeye is attempting to persuade you to appreciate its new character rather than forcing you to.
At the very least, the authors are attempting to make you like her. Surprisingly, Hailee Steinfeld and Vera Farmiga’s performances are lackluster. As Kate, Steinfeld displays absolutely little passion or expression, and her stiff depiction detracts from several potentially wonderful passages. Kate, for example, is lurking in the basement of the building where the party is being held (which, I believe, is either the Americas Society or the Council on Foreign Relations, based on its location). When the head of the catering crew discovers her impersonating a waiter, she turns the tables on him by acting enraged that he doesn’t recognize her. It’s a great idea, but Steinfeld’s delivery is odd; she underplays everything to the point that it seems like she’s reading the words rather than acting out a scene. A previous sequence in which she smashes the bell tower is also unremarkable since Steinfeld is simply… there. She doesn’t show any feeling, and as a result, the stunning images in the backdrop don’t connect. Throughout the film, Farmiga seems bored, delivering her lines as though she’s simply trying to get through the day. I’m surprised since I believe they’re both great actresses in general. If you haven’t watched True Grit by the Coen Brothers, you should. It shows what Steinfeld was capable of at the age of thirteen. Farmiga has a long list of fantastic film and television roles under her belt, all of which she has excelled at. Is there a case of superhero weariness among actors?
You’ll also note that Hawkeye isn’t mentioned anywhere else in the story outline. That’s because he’s only in “Never Meet Your Heroes” for a few minutes at a time, and while he is, he’s primarily sitting and conversing, or sitting and watching a performance, or heading towards a seat, or… urinating. Jeremy Renner is terrific in what little he has to do, and he fits back into the role like a well-worn glove. However, his shortened position in a program named after him exemplifies what Marvel is doing with these shows: replacing our favorite heroes with younger, more modern-day-acceptable counterparts. Even though the Broadway musical Rogers is about Captain America’s time as an Avenger, Steve Rogers cannot be referred to as Captain America any more since we must now only recognize Sam Wilson in that position. Even Clint’s one combat scene is obscured by a snowy vehicle window, through which Kate observes the action; she, not he, is the emphasis. (How can a college girl battling some low-rent goons in a winery look better than all the battles in Shang-Chi?) Some claim Clint will play a greater role in the future, and I’m sure that’s true now that he and Kate have met. But by making her the focus of the pilot and the driving force of the developing narrative, the message is that this is her show, and because it’s named Hawkeye, the message is that she’s Hawkeye now, even if it’s not official.
This is why “Never Meet Your Heroes” and, I believe, Hawkeye as a whole, are tough to evaluate. It has a lot going for it on a technical level. The narrative is well-crafted, part of the action is entertaining, and the landscapes are breathtaking. (Sue me if I’m wrong, but I love hearing all the Christmas music.) But, on a personal level, I despise what it says about Clint Barton and the Marvel Universe as a whole by shunning him in favor of a “better” version of him. We’re now in the age of legacy heroes, and I’m ready to cash in.

Good
“Never Met Your Heroes” contains a solid action scene and great screenplay, but some of the performances are unexpectedly weak, and Clint Barton is shoved into the background so Kate Bishop may take center stage.
Roku’s platform continues to expand, with 32.3 million active accounts currently confirmed by the business. This is a 1.7 million increase over the previous three months.
In addition to the increase in users, the firm observed an increase in the amount of hours streamed in the previous quarter. In the last three months, Roku devices have streamed a total of 10.3 billion hours.
Roku is continuing to extend its presence in the streaming business when regarded as a whole.
What exactly is Roku?
Roku is a hardware company as well as a service provider. Roku streaming devices, for example, may be purchased for as little as $29.
Roku has become a popular streaming player seller because to its cheap cost and simplicity of use.
On the software perspective, Roku OS is pre-installed on all of these devices. This platform is similar to Android Television (Android TV) and Fire TV in that it allows users to access applications and premium services directly.
Roku OS is also accessible on a variety of third-party devices. You can purchase TVs that come pre-loaded with Roku OS, just like you can with Android TV and Fire TV. Another manner in which the firm has managed to grow its customer base is via this method.
In the same way that Roku has grown its software outside its hardware, the business has also begun to spread its services beyond Roku OS devices. By installing the Roku app, you may now access the company’s “The Roku Channel” on many devices.
There is no need for a Roku OS or a Roku player.
What is the Roku Channel, and how does it work?
The launch of The Roku Channel was perhaps one of the most significant changes Roku made to its ecosystem. This is a free service that enables users to view a limited number of TV episodes and movies.
The Roku Channel was formerly exclusively accessible on Roku OS, but it is now available on a variety of third-party platforms, including Android and iOS.
Using an AVOD strategy, Roku is able to provide free streaming. In other words, The Roku Channel shows advertisements.
The fundamental difference between AVOD and SVOD is the usage of advertisements. Netflix, for example, is an SVOD provider since it relies on subscribers rather than advertisements.
Some providers, on the other hand, use a hybrid approach, combining the SVOD and AVOD concepts. Hulu is an excellent example.
While Hulu’s on-demand ad-free membership plan costs $12.99 per month, it also provides a discount by broadcasting advertising. Hulu’s less expensive version costs $5.99 per month and exemplifies how AVOD and SVOD tactics may be used to benefit both customers and providers.
In today’s statement, Roku said that it would continue to concentrate on the ad-only model. This has proven to be a tremendously effective strategy for the organization, as it currently has over 32 million active users.
Gorou is about to make his debut in Genshin Impact, but it’s conceivable that his voice actor, Cory Yee, might not have played the adorable dog hero if he had followed through with his initial plan. Yee worked as an on-site production worker after graduating from film school, but instead of continuing along that road, he opted to pursue his ambition. In an interview with, Yee discussed his professional path.
“I was just like, yeah, on-site production sort of sucks,” Yee said. “Not to disrespect that job, but it just didn’t quite satisfy the creative side of things for me, personally.” “So I switched and attempted to take a lot of courses and study a lot, and finally, I was able to realize a goal I’d had since I was a kid, watching Animaniacs with Rob Paulson or Robin Williams in Aladdin.” Yee was encouraged to explore voice acting after seeing these performances. “I believe those things never fully departed.”

Voice acting isn’t the most profitable field to get into, and the payoff may be steep for most people. The quantity of money you earn is determined on the gigs you are able to get. It might be a daunting undertaking when you factor in the high cost of professional quality audio equipment, as well as all of the courses. Fortunately, Yee was prepared since he had money set up.
“Of course, it costs more than I make since I wasn’t producing anything for a long time,” Yee said. “Of course, from a cost analysis standpoint, it’s not worth it on that alone, but how much of an investment is it in your soul?” You know, it’s usually a good trade.” And, as Yee taught us, it’s better to try than not to try.
Being a voice actor also has its advantages, as Yee was able to voice a prominent character in one of his favorite games, Genshin Impact, after previously portraying a few small NPCs. “Gorou means a lot to me since I’m AR 58, so I’m really high up,” he said. AR 58 is a very high level for Genshin Impact, and he enjoys the game due of the mechanics. “It’s a good thing I got to voice characters for this game since else I wouldn’t have known about it until much later.”

Yee used to be a big fan of World of Warcraft and other Blizzard games, but he lost interest over time. Genshin Impact, on the other hand, has snatched him and hasn’t let him since. “I’m a huge fan of co-op RPGs,” Yee stated. “And this game ended up being like, co-op RPG, ability-based, no guns — I’m so sick of firearms — you have abilities, and gear, and weapons, and various playstyles, and different combinations, elemental combos,” says the developer. Yee fell in love with Genshin because he was unique.
We were astonished by how deep Yee’s voice was when we heard him speak, given that Gorou is an adolescent with a higher pitched tone. He claims that nearly no one recognized he was Gorou until far later in his life. It makes sense, however, when you learn that Spider-Man is one of his bucket list jobs. He seems to have been doing it for a long time and has attended conferences dressed as the friendly neighborhood hero in costume. “All I wanted to do for a day was pretend to be Spider-Man and connect with people, screw with them, and make jokes at them.”
Surprisingly, his vocal range matches Gorou’s, despite the fact that the character does not reach falsetto tones. He doesn’t have to do much physical work.
So far, Gorou has only appeared in a few moments as the game leads us into Inazuma, and Yee’s tough and faithful portrayal of the character is excellent for the part.

“He may not have the finest strategic mind in the world, but he gives it his all,” Yee said of his character. “And I believe that is the most essential thing, and of course, he is lovely; people adore him.” “Most people don’t question him at all since he is a powerful leader [due to his being] ferocious and loyal like many, many dogs,” he said, despite his lack of experience. When MiHoYo adds his hangout, we’ll learn more about the character.
However, until it’s time to record, Yee and the other voice performers are unaware of the story’s setting. Unlike in film and television, he is given the script and must do it on the spot. Actors in other kinds of media get the script in advance, have time to practice, and may work things out on set. “It’s a very different experience in that regard,” Yee said, “but the bottom line is, it’s still acting, regardless of how you slice it.”
He makes a significant decision in the direction of his acting when he performs in voice over sessions. “If you’re a little unsure about your acting option, then you don’t have a solid basis to grab on a character, right?” he remarked. “You’re more concerned with what I need to decide to do right now, and you’re not thinking about the scene’s background, or the actual location your character is in.” It’s “so much simpler to live in the space and think about all the other things, including their emotional needs” if you make a solid decision for your character, who they are, and their identity. “You’re not going to get there without them,” Yee says if you don’t make solid decisions.
His pursuit of his ambition has kept him going through countless seminars and studio performances, and he encourages others to do the same. “As long as it’s a nice moral thing, I think,” Yee remarked, “never overlook what makes your soul happy.” “Whether it’s a pastime or a career, I believe that everyone should attempt to do something they’ve always wanted to do at least once in their lives, and it may or may not work out.”
“I believe Gorou would advise that after you’ve finished waging the good fight, you should rest and do something that makes you happy.” That’s something I’m sure he’d say.”
Google is now pushing out an update to Android TV that includes a number of new capabilities, including access to the same watchlist as Google TV with Chromecast is a service that allows you to watch. The overall goal of the upgrade is to enhance how suggestions are presented and how users save content to watch later.
Android TV has been around for a while and is used to power a number of smart TVs and streaming devices, including the Shield TV by Nvidia. Google TV, on the other hand, was just released with Google’s newest Chromecast gadget. Since then, Android TV has gradually adopted enhancements that help the user interface’s appearance and feel to more nearly mirror those of Google TV.
The most recent update exemplifies this, as the Google TV watchlist will now be accessible on Android TV devices. The user will be able to add titles to a dedicated watchlist row on the Discovery tab of the home screen once it is accessible. In fact, users may add movies to their watchlist on a variety of devices, including their smartphone, and the watchlist on Android TV will instantly sync. The upgrade will begin trickling out to Android TV this week, according to Google.
In addition, the upgrade includes “immersive detail pages,” as Google calls them. In essence, Android TV viewers will get improved and more cinematic-like results, including the auto-playing of trailers when they are available. Users may disable “video previews” in the Device Preferences section of the settings menu to disable the auto-play function.
Android TV users may anticipate an enhanced recommendations experience in general, in addition to the redesigned watchlist and more immersive video sites. By clicking left or right on a title, the user will be able to instruct the algorithm whether to display fewer or more comparable titles in the future. The ability to fine-tune suggestions will not come standard, but it will be accessible through a new “Improve your recommendations” card that customers will see after the update is installed. After active, the user may conduct as many likes and dislikes as they like, with the system updating the suggestions algorithm automatically once they’re done.
Google Image
These improvements are mostly accessible on the Chromecast with Google TV, so any homes utilizing the newest Chromecast as one of their streaming devices will be acquainted with the changes. The modifications should make it simpler to locate and manage content in the future for individuals who rely only on Android TV devices.
Google is the source of this information.
The Search Ghost and White Mushroom Heartless, as well as Bambi’s summon in Agrabah, all drop Bright Gems.
The best technique for obtaining these gems is to use the Look for ghosts.. They’re significantly simpler to farm than other techniques, even with a 4% drop rate. And since the second area of Traverse Town contains a large quantity of these ghosts, bringing them out here provides a simple farming path.
Search Ghosts may be found in the Second District at the following locations:
– Behind the stores in the alley – On the top of the shops (“Suits & Dresses” and “Boots & Shoes”) – Near the water fountain – In the Hotel’s Green Room (“Room 2”)
Furthermore, these heartless respawn on a regular basis. So you could farm them endlessly by doing loops through the Second District Hotel.
Where Can I Get Bright Gems in Kingdom Hearts 1 + KH1.5?
For these jewels, there are just a few viable farming strategies, and the Search Ghost is by far the most effective.
If you’re going to Agrabah anyhow, Bambi’s summon may be useful. However, since you’ll need to fill Bambi’s charge gauge three times to even have a shot at a Bright Gem, this will take a bit more forethought.
That being stated, below are all of the ways you may get Bright Gems in the game.
Search Ghosts
Halloween Town, Monstro, Atlantica, Traverse Town, and the End of the World are all haunted by these terrifying dreams.
These folks aren’t exactly squandering gems with a 4% drop probability. However, they will most likely be your best choice for cultivating a large number of them.
Simply go to Traverse Town’s second area and walk around near the water fountain (down the stairs in the 2nd District entering from the Synthesis Shop). There are a slew of ghosts in the area, all of them should be able to provide you with diamonds at a decent fee.
You may also cultivate them in the Hotel’s Green Room.
This is an excellent location since the ghosts will respawn if you leave the area and then return, making it a relatively straightforward approach.
Mushrooms, White
These uncommon soulless may be found in almost every planet, although they don’t always spawn. It’s a bit more difficult to grow White Mushrooms because of this.
Cure magic on the mushroom three times for Bright jewels (you’ll have to wait till it mimes for Cure orders). You have a 40% chance of getting a Bright Gem if you properly cast three Cure magic spells in a row.
You may alternatively try to cast Cure magic as the very last spell, which will still offer you a 10% chance.
Bambi
Bambi has a charge gauge that drops a variety of useful goods as you defeat more Heartless.
He has a 30% chance to drop a Bright Gem if you call him in Agrabah and vanquish numerous opponents to fill up the gauge x3 times.
This procedure might be time-consuming, but it is significantly less difficult than dealing with White Mushrooms.
Bambi can only drop Bright Gems in Agrabah, so keep that in mind. Bambi will have a different drop table if he is summoned on other planets.
Everything Bambi can drop in Agrabah is listed here, arranged by the number of gauges you’ll need to fill at each drop rate:
Gauges | Drops |
---|---|
x1 Filled | High-potency (100 percent ) |
x2 Filled | Ether is a kind of ether (100 percent ) Shard of Light (40 percent ) |
x3 Filled | Mega-Remedy (100 percent ) Shard of Light (60 percent ) a brilliant gem (30 percent ) |
Uses for a Bright Gem
Bright Gems may be utilized in a few synthesis recipes, some of which involve goods that you’ll want to make several times.
Here’s a complete list of everything you can do using Bright Gems in Kingdom Hearts 1 + KH1.5.
Megalixir: Restores your party’s HP and MP completely.
With List IV and x5 Bright Shards, x3 Bright Gems, x1 Bright Crystal, x1 Shiny Crystal, and x2 Gale, you may construct one in the original KH1.
There is an alternative formula in KH1.5 Remix that does not need any Bright Gems.
Angel Bangle: This item offers +6 HP and +2 Defense to anybody in your party. With List II and x3 Spirit Shards, x3 Power Shards, and x3 Bright Gems, you may make this in Kingdom Hearts 1.
You’ll need List II with x3 Thunder Shards and x1 Bright Gem if you’re playing KH1.5 Remix or Final Mix.
Ribbon: One of the greatest defensive items in the game, providing +20 percent resistance to Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, and Dark, as well as +3 Defense.
You may make one using List IV and x5 Blaze Gems, x5 Frost Gems, x5 Thunder Gems, x5 Bright Gems, and x3 Gale in Kingdom Hearts 1.
There is a formula in KH1.5 Remix & Final Mix that does not need any Bright Gems.
Defense Up: Gives any character an extra point of defense.
Combine it with List IV, x3 Lucid Shards, x3 Bright Shards, x2 Bright Gems, x1 Power Crystal, and x5 Orichalcums in KH1.5 Remix.
The original Kingdom Hearts 1 game contains an alternative formula that does not need Bright Gems.
Dark Ring: Fight darkness with darkness, gaining +20 percent dark damage resistance and +3 defense with this item.
This ring may be made using x2 Lucid Gems and x2 Bright Gems in KH1.5 Remix with List III.
Cosmic Arts: This is another another fantastic addition to any outfit. It will give you +9 HP, +2 MP, and +2 AP, as well as improve your magic and summoning abilities.
Only x5 Bright Shards, x3 Bright Gems, x1 Bright Crystal, and x3 Mythril may be used to manufacture this in KH1.5 Remix/Final Mix with List V.
Is it Worth Farming Bright Gems?
In Kingdom Hearts 3, they are employed in a number of very powerful end-game level accessories. Plus, having extra Defense Ups is always a good idea.
So grinding out enough Gems to at least synthesize goods like the Ribbon, Cosmic Arts, and a few Megalixirs is well worth your effort.
Search Ghosts are also rather simple to locate and defeat, particularly in Traverse Town and Halloween Town.
Apple TV+ may be seen on a wide range of devices, including smart TVs, streaming players, mobile devices, gaming consoles, and web browsers. While the Apple TV app used to be restricted in terms of non-Apple device compatibility, things have evolved dramatically since its first release. Apple TV+ episodes and movies are now available on a variety of platforms and devices.
Apple’s video streaming service debuted in late 2019. A normal Apple TV+ membership costs $4.99 per month, making it a cost-effective alternative to other subscription services. Apple TV+, like the first device support, had certain limitations in terms of the number of movies and episodes accessible to stream. Apple, on the other hand, has enlarged both the content choices and the device compatibility list since then.
Apple TV+, as predicted, works well with all of Apple’s own devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. Consumers, on the other hand, may be shocked at how easily the subscription service is now available, and how many gadgets in the house are likely to be compatible with Apple TV+.
Apple TV+ is compatible with the following platforms and devices:

Summary of Apple TV+ supported devices
Apple has a reputation for being protective of its applications and services, and Apple TV+ was no exception. Apple has progressively expanded support over time, and its video streaming service is now accessible on a broad range of devices. Naturally, Apple’s own iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and Apple TV are expected to be extremely compatible with Apple TV+.
The subscription service is also available on a range of third-party smart TVs, streaming devices, gaming consoles, and web browsers for non-Apple device users. Whether a device isn’t listed as compatible, check if it’s AirPlay 2-enabled, since this will allow you to cast Apple TV+ from another device.
Season 8, Episode 2 “Armageddon Part 2”: The Flash
Is the Flash going crazy? It certainly seems so in “Armageddon Part 2.” This week’s episode is the second of a five-part event that kicks off Season 8, and it sees Barry attempting to persuade Despero that he would not create the havoc the extraterrestrial visitor fears, which may be more difficult than he expects. While “Armageddon Part 2” is weaker on action and jokes than the first, it gradually builds in tension until we assume we’re seeing another Crisis-level narrative – and, because to all the psychic nonsense, we’re not sure what to think.
Barry is desperate to show Despero incorrect about the risk he represents, but he is feeling the strain of stress as seemingly all elements of his life disintegrate at once. During her crimes, a metahuman criminal called Xotar displays telepathic abilities, prompting Barry to assume she is the cause of his future deeds. If Despero chooses to go for Barry again, Frost advises Chester to construct a weapon that can kill him. The mysterious disappearance of a cherished figure is revealed.
“Armageddon Part 2” starts immediately after last week’s conclusion, with Despero knocking Barry to the ground as a result of their agreement. Despero is putting the Flash to the test to see how much strength he’ll need to kill him if the need arises. This first scene tells a lot about the show’s new villain: he’s systematic and ready for anything, or at least everything he can anticipate. Despero is trying to preserve the planet, and his brief ceasefire with Barry will not deter him. This is in stark contrast to Barry, who cannot comprehend Despero’s claim that he is a danger. As a consequence, Despero, despite his desire to assassinate our hero, seems more rational than Barry, allowing for multiple scenarios but being prepared for the worst. The remainder of the show, particularly Barry’s actions, are shaped by this contrast.
*SPOILERS*
Barry spends the majority of “Armageddon Part 2” hunting for a fast remedy. He’s so certain that Despero is incorrect that he’s on the hunt for an outside element that may be to blame for the disaster that Despero believes he’s to blame for. He creates Xotar, a (very stupid) villain-of-the-week psychic who forces anybody in her path to suffer a mental breakdown, such as a hospital security officer who is catatonic. And his first experience with Xotar confirms this: he’s caught in one of her psychic who’s-it-whats, and he wakes up in a moment, but it’s the aftermath of a horrific assault on his loft in which he almost murdered Caitlin, Chester, and Allegra (a third of which would have been a tragedy). That seems to be the case when Caitlin uses some sci-fi STAR Labs technology to establish that Barry is healthy and stable — there’s a lot we simply have to go with this week between the psychic things and the scientific stuff. Isn’t it obvious that it’s Xotar?
But, in assuming so, Barry is committing a typical misstep (not those ones). Barry’s life unravels piece by little in “Armageddon Part 2,” as he loses his job, learns he’s being investigated for a crime he didn’t commit, loses STAR Labs, and loses control of himself to Xotar. But, even when his friends attempt to refocus him, he either ignores or rationalizes all of these things, fixating entirely on Xotar. Xotar is a symptom, not the sickness, and Barry does not recognize this until the very end. Barry sees himself rip up his city in a Hulk-like frenzy after defeating her, and as Xotar had been incarcerated at the time, he couldn’t have been under her spell. This implies that his comparable outburst in the loft wasn’t caused by her. But when he learns that Joe has been dead for months and he has no recollection of it, Barry realizes that something is seriously wrong with him. Barry has lost all of his parents at some time, and although he’s made errors as a result, none of them have fully broken him; losing Joe may well have been the ultimate straw, the death he couldn’t overcome. Is it, however, too late for him to stop what Despero feels is about to happen?
The battle between the larger good and the immediate good is at the heart of “Armageddon Part 2,” as it was last week and in so many previous episodes and seasons. Barry’s commitment to the immediate good has always revealed itself in his faith in people or his desire to assist others. It now manifests itself in Barry’s belief in himself, in his own goodness; this makes sense and seems like a natural progression for his character. Barry has had doubts in the past, but he’s done enough good that he should be able to acknowledge his own bravery. But, even if it’s warranted, selfishness doesn’t come easily to Barry Allen. He can’t compartmentalize it as Despero can with his commitment to serve the greater good. The prospect of losing Joe and having no recollection of it hits him square in the face with reality, or at the very least the chance that he’s incorrect. Perhaps the experience was too much for him, and Despero was correct about his mental fragility.
But can we put our faith in Despero? I don’t believe so, and one of the most intriguing things of “Armageddon Part 2” is that it seems Despero is just as intent on proving his point as Barry is. Whatever is going on, I don’t believe it’s related to Joe’s death – in fact, I’m not certain he’s dead (which is why I’m not throwing things). Despero’s presence throughout the show suggests that he’s more engaged in the events than we would imagine. Is he so certain in Barry’s turn that he’ll go to any length to ensure that he can murder him and rescue the future? He has psychic talents that are stronger than Cecile’s and, most likely, Xotar’s. And he regrets his prior kindness, his embracing of the immediate good, and the resultant devastation of his home planet in that fantastic moment when he tells Barry how he came to live on Earth (which has more than a few shades of Thanos’ narrative from the MCU). Perhaps tampering with Barry’s trial time is his method of letting go of his compassionate impulses while justifying his actions by claiming that he gave the Flash a chance. Despero is quickly becoming one of the most interesting villains in the show’s history – maybe even the whole Arrowverse – and Tony Curran is fantastic in the character, frightening, driven, but also sad and genuinely human. However, the CGI is still the worst.
“Armageddon Part 2” doesn’t have many subplots, which is perhaps for the best. The sole one here is connected to the primary narrative and theme: when Frost advises that he create a weapon capable of murdering Despero, Chester is confronted with his own ethical problem. Chester is a self-described pacifist who opposes the creation of weapons, particularly those that kill. Barry’s life, on the other hand, is on the line; Despero is very strong, and the Flash is unlikely to be able to destroy him. Is he essentially murdering Barry if he doesn’t create the weapon? If that’s the case, he has no option except to pick who lives and who dies, and doing nothing is just as proactive as manufacturing a ray gun. Issue episode, he gets off easy by repelling Despero so Barry may flee, but this is certain to come up again before the three-eyed monster is finally defeated. Chester is still irritating, but I enjoyed this subplot since it connects him to the show more philosophically.
In Season 8’s opening salvo, “Armageddon Part 2” is another strong entry. The stakes seem like they’ve been elevated for the next three chapters, as Barry’s ethics are cast in a less favorable way, Despero becomes even more fascinating, and the stakes feel like they’ve been upped for the next three installments. This one isn’t helped by some poor special effects and an uninteresting mini-boss.
